The 2022 Diageo Special & Rare collection is known as "Elusive Expressions", drawn from some of Scotland?s most interesting, legendary distilleries and curated by Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson. They portray the otherworldly beings which have fiercely protected the heartlands of remote Scottish distilleries for an eternity, according to our ancient fables. This year each bottle has its own unique QR code which, when scanned, takes you on a multi-sensory experience that tells you the story of the whisky and the mythical creature behind the artwork, whilst providing tasting notes to prompt your nose and palate along the way.
Talisker 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml (Special Release 2022) was matured in and blended from a mix of 1st-fill ex-bourbon casks, refill casks, and wine-seasoned casks.
The nose instantly transports you across to Skye, with the smell of bitumen on the road infusing into your nostrils, together with Talisker's signature iodine and medicinal notes. Briny maritime notes abound; there's sea spray in the air. The nose is complex, there are also hints of tobacco leaf and saddle leather. The palate is a bit softer, rounded, and grounded in the earthy peat. It possibly lacks for sweetness ? the wine casks have made it a bit drier and more savoury than the sweet and punchy 8yo Taliskers that featured in the 2020 and 2021 Special Releases.

Unit price perDespite being owned by blenders, MacDonald & Muir, for most of the 20th century, Glenmorangie had an early focus on bottling its single malt. Some records show that its single malt was being sold as early as the late 19th century. This became the distillery's main output in 1959, and with the unique flavours derived from Scotland's tallest stills, coupled with their pioneering use of wood finishing, Glenmorangie is now one of the world's biggest selling malts. As a result, the distillery portfolio over the years has been extensive, and little has been spared for independent bottlers.
The Accord is part of a trio of travel retail releases from Glenmorangie that also featured The Tribute and The Elementa. All three were exclusively launched at Dubai airport in October 2019 before being rolled out globally in 2020.
This 12 year old expression has been matured in both bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks.

A second addition to the INK #3 series marketed by French Retailer, Le Comptoir Irlandais is this toddler Blair Athol. While the distillery's production is primarily intended for Bell's, indies are on the rise. This one from Signatory Vintage was distilled in 2013 and filled into a rechar hogshead (a reconstituted & re-burnt cask). Akin to a malt-heavy blend, it's softer than usual for Blair Athol, offering vanilla and fruit salad on the nose as well as hints of beeswax. Likewise, the mouthfeel surprises: supple and slightly oily with flavours of barley cake, grain store and pineapple pudding, before wood spices rise in the medium long finish

Palate: Nutty at first, with layers of hazelnut cream and diced almond. A hint of ground nutmeg.
Finish: Banana chips and more baking spices.

Unit price perThis whisky's character is predominantly driven by slow maturation in sherry seasoned European oak casks and a higher proportion of Orkney peated malt. There are notes of rich vanilla cream infused with warm winter spices, the tang of sun-ripened lemons glazed with sweet heather honey, and clouds of aromatic peat smoke.
Intensely smoky and rich, this whisky is fantastic served with lamb cutlets grilled with fresh mint or alongside a creamy blue-veined cheese.
