Riesling

The name Mon Cheval is in homage to the owner's champion racehorse, Under Cover Lover, whose winning ways helped the dream of making wine possible. The 2.2 hectare vineyard is found at the entrance to Weka Pass in North Canterbury, and is planted with Pinot Noir and only a small amount of Riesling.

The sweetness is perfectly placed against a backdrop of acidity and ripe citrus and apple flavours. Balanced and well made, crisp and lengthy, a great aperitif style for Summer 2024.

Commercial description

This aromatic wine features a delightful blend of lemon, lime, and red apple, complemented by subtle floral notes. On the palate, you?ll experience a crisp and just off-dry taste that leaves a lovely length and a mineral finish. With every sip, you?ll be transported to the sunny hillsides where this wine was crafted, feeling refreshed and invigorated.

Abbazia di Novacella 'Praepositus' Riesling is a dry, white, semi-aromatic wine from Italy's Trentino Alto Adige region. It is a straw yellow colour with golden highlights, and aromas of pineapple, peach, yellow pulp fruit, honey and flint. The palate is linear, racy and savoury, with strong minerality.

The grapes for this wine come from the Conca di Bressanone in the province of Bolzano, at altitudes between 650 and 750 meters above sea level. The wine is vinified and aged in stainless steel, and is a regular winner of the Tre Bicchieri award.

The Abbazia di Novacella wine estate dates back to 1142, and has been an important cultural and spiritual center since medieval times

This Riesling celebrates the 50th harvest of Heaphy?s oldest blocks of Riesling and the wine is dry, racy and firm, opening up with lively jasmine, spicy ginger and white tea floral notes over a structured palate and intense, mineral finish. Grapes were  pressed in stainless steel tanks, 15% old puncheon barrels and one third in amphora.

This is a great match with sashimi, smoked fish or goat's cheese.

Tim and Margaret Coney founded Coney Wines on a 16-acre bare paddock in Martinborough more than 25 years ago. Not without much encouragement, the old barren sheep paddock quickly turned into a thriving 24/7 bustle of vine-tending, winemaking, marketing and restauranteuring. With each operation undertaken in the hallowed, self-flagellating Martinborough tradition - by manual labour!

The aim and guiding principles continue today with the ownership mantle of Coney Wines passed to long-time winemaker and daughter Lisa, and son-in-law Rusty in 2022. The Coney legacy of a small family-owned winery producing a range of beautiful wines that go perfectly with food, family and friends remains in place!

This is a sumptuously dry Riesling with around 5 g/l of residual sugar and real depth and character made entirely with fruit from the local Martinborough five and a half hectare site.

Off-dry and simply delicious! Our pick for serious Riesling connoisseurs. The fruit character of the Southern Valleys is balanced by the minerality of the river gravels, all wrapped up in a dry, crisp acidity. 10+ years of aging potential if you have the self-control but drinking exceptionally well now.

Vinification
The grapes were machine harvested in the cool of the morning, cold settled and cool fermented in stainless steel tanks before blending and finishing for bottling in spring.

From the winery...

Founder, Philippa was raised on a farm just outside of Lawrence, Central Otago's first gold-rush town.  Well before it was ‘the right thing to do’, Philippa’s parents farmed holistically and with respect to the environment and animals, so it was perfectly natural for Philippa to follow suit on her vineyard.

Today, Domaine Rewa produces over 15,000 bottles   each year, including Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Central Otago's great white made in sweet form balanced by fresh and gorgeously pure acidity, adding length to every succulent sip. Made by one of New Zealand's biggest Riesling devotees, winemaker Duncan Forsyth, co owner of Mount Edward Wines.

This Riesling was made from fruit grown on mature vines, in the limey clay loams of the Waipara Valley floor ? our younger vines grow well on the lighter gravel soils. Harvest is generally late in the season when the Riesling fruit is ripe and clean as this is ideal for development of tangy ripe flavours, while retaining a crisp freshness. These grapes were harvested while cool, then given a long, slow press. The juice was settled, racked and cool fermentation in stainless steel followed. This has produced a full flavoured Riesling with fresh aromas of citrus, and crisp apple along with hints of ginger and spice. These flavours continue into the palate, forming a juicy wine with a perfect balance between sweetness and tangy acidity.

Food Match This Riesling will develop in the cellar for several years, but is equally delicious now with a wide range of foods- seafood and cuisine with Thai and Japanese influences, or as an aperitif with smoked salmon and avocado. Drink this now or cellar for up to eight years.
