What the critics say...
The 2019 La Gaffeliere has a wonderful bouquet of mineral-rich black and red fruit and sous-bois, a little tobacco and pencil box emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe. Perfectly balanced, leading to an almost Left Bank, graphite-tinged finish courtesy of the 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 continues the purple patch of this Saint-Emilion stalwart. No doubt a wine that will give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2025-2060.
96 points – Vinous
The 2019 La Gaffeliere wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries and cherries mingled with subtle hints of burning embers and loamy soil that's framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's a concentrated, vibrant wine built around bright acids and fine, powdery tannins. Its vivid fruit tones and classical balance make this Cabernet Franc-rich blend a promising candidate for sustained bottle age. Anyone who has tasted the great wines this estate produced in the 1950s and 1960s knows how great this site can be; and with stricter selection as well as the elimination of fruit from vines growing on the plain from the blend, that potential appears to be being unleashed at last. Drink Date 2027 - 2057.

Neal Martin Rating 91
"The 2009 Ch?teau d'Armailhac has a lovely nose, the Cabernet Sauvignon component more expressive compared to my previous encounter, graphite infusing the generous black fruit that is in keeping with the style. The palate is medium-bodied with touches of cherry liqueur and spice on the entry, the Merlot in the driving seat with good acidity and a lively, spicy finish with tobacco, hickory and black pepper on the aftertaste. It is a delicious d'Armailhac that is just about ready to rock 'n roll. Tasted August 2016."
Drink Date 2018 - 2032
Tasting notes:
Deep garnet red with purple highlights. Good intensity, mixing ripe black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry) with flattering toasty and spicy notes when agitated. Round and smooth on the palate with velvety tannins. Long fruity aftertaste with notes of vanilla and licorice.
Food matches:
Grilled red meat, pasta, spicy dishes and cheese.
Winemaking: Classic vinification process with long maceration and partly ageing in oak. De-stalking and crushing of the grapes – alcoholic fermentation in vats with rack and return twice a day (temperature carefully controlled to reach 27°C / 81°F at the end of the fermentation) – micro oxygenation before malolactic fermentation to enhance the color and to supple the tannins.
Soil: The different terroirs (clay and limestone in Limoux and gravels in the Gard) add complexity and richness to the wine.
Climate: Selection of vines located in the coolest areas of the Languedoc region near Limoux (wide temperature range between cool nights and warm days) and in the Gard region where the weather is warmer.
Aging: Malolactic fermentation in vats.

Unit price perTraditional vinification is carried out in cement vats. Vatting lasts for between 20 and 30 days, depending on the vintage and, after the malolactic fermentation, the wines go into barrel (one-third renewed every year) and remain there for 12 months. The final selection of which wines will go to make the final blend for Ch?teau Angludet is made in the following February or March. The process of selection is strict (as only the best wines can be included) and is done by a series of tastings. Once the final blend has been done, the wine is fined with egg whites and very lightly filtered before bottling. Drink 2023-2035.
