The McAskill range consists of small volumes of the highest quality wine sourced exclusively from the Gaelic Cemetery Vineyard located in the well known sub region of White Hut. Named in honour after John McAskill who donated the land next door to our vineyard in 1860 to be used as a cemetery for the Gaelic speaking Scottish pioneers of the Clare Valley.

Tasting Notes
Deep red in appearance with a fresh and youthful aroma. Red fruited – plums, cranberry, with underlying warm spices. Subtle oak maturation gives a wonderful textured and vibrant offering adding malt and spice complexity. Flavours linger in the mouth effortlessly, combined with a ripe but fine and long tannin profile bringing all the components together in complete harmony.

The Pirathon Gold Shiraz was introduced to Pirathon's range in 2016 as a premium reserve wine.

The best grape lots were carefully selected from the 2016 intake and combined with 100% French Oak barrels with no compromise on quality.

The resulting wine provides a palate of bright fruits balanced with chalky tannins which dominate in this classy, highly integrated, harmonious Barossa Shiraz.

The Pirathon Gold Shiraz is for those who want only the very best and cannot settle for anything else. Pirathon Gold provides the prestige best of the pick grapes, carefully handled and fermented in the best quality barrels with a taste and appearance that will astound you and your guests.

Palate
Rich and full-bodied. Very generous, powerful. Totally mouth-coating. Bright fruit flavours, licorice. Firm chalky tannins giving longevity as well as nice grip to counter-balance sleek fruits, but importantly polished. Harmonious acid. Very classy, savoury oak, highly integrated. A long lingering finish.

Pure Eden is a bold expression of Shiraz from a single vineyard site in the Eden Valley, which was planted by Charles Angas in the 1890s. The vineyard was later owned by the Shiltons from 1911 to 1926; Meakins 1926 to 1929; Roeslers 1929 to 1961; Andretzkes 1961 to 2011 and, now, by the Lindner family. This wine is a reward of these guardians’ efforts for more than 100 years.

This wine is a beautifully ripe Shiraz with rich blackberry  and blueberry flavours and aromas of black olive, cedar, earth and white pepper. Velvety tannins add structure and texture to this wine. Ageing was for 24 months in French oak, 47% new and the balanced pre-used oak. 

Langmeil is owned by the Lindner family, which has been making wine for six generations in the Barossa Valley.

One of Australia's greatest value red wines, not only for being affordably priced but because this wine is made with grapes that were hand pressed following fermentation. This gentle extraction method brings out smooth and silky textures in all of the wines made at d'Arenberg, accentuating fruity aromas and brightness of flavour. 

Pure Shiraz that's affordable doesn't get better. 

Yalumba Paradox Shiraz is made from grapes grown in a vineyard on the Barossa Valley floor which is known for its hot climate and bold wines, but this one fits the bill of beautiful elegance and structure as well as of powerful dark fruit flavours. Its intense tannins are beautifully balanced by refreshing acidity, lithe texture and it ticks the vegan friendly box.

Drink with mushrooms, tasty cheddar or anything meaty on the BBQ.

Bouquet: Bright and vibrant with ripe fruits, primarily dark plums and blackcurrants, with a hint of raspberry coulis and coffee mocha oak.

Palate: Rich blackcurrant and raspberries. Crisp, clean acidity and delightful tannin structure leading to a lingering finish.

About the winery...

Six generations have nurtured some of the most historic vineyards in Australia.
In 1839 William Formby arrived in Australia from the United Kingdom and it was in 1882, after four decades pioneering South Australia, he purchased the now historic Metala estate.

In 1891 William and his son, Arthur, planted 21 rows of Shiraz, and 14 rows of
what are now the oldest family-owned Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world.
In 1894 a further 5.4 acres of Shiraz were planted. After almost five decades making Metala wine in a purpose-built winery on the estate, the winemaking was transferred to Arthur’s Brother-in-Law, at Stonyfell Cellars. The wines continued to be made here until management shifted to various holdings beginning with Dalgety Wine Estate in the early 1970’s.

In 1981, 5th Generation Guy Adams took over the management of the mixed farm estate. With a sincere appreciation and respect of viticulture and to family legacy, Guy, together with his wife Liz, began a 20-year long battle to return Metala to its original home. In 2022 the dream became a reality and Metala came home to Langhorne Creek and the family who planted and have nurtured the vines for more than 130 years.

Bouquet: Blackcurrant and cassis layered with notes of subtle pepper and spice. 

Palate: Generous and sweet blackcurrant followed by layers of cedar oak and dried bay leaf. Elegant and textured tannins are balanced with natural acidity leaving a firm, persistent finish.

Killerman?s Run Shiraz is comprised of selected parcels of fruit from the Clare Valley. The result is a layered, concentrated red with great depth, spice and red fruit flavours. Subtle smoky and liquorice notes add complexity to the long finish.

The older Barossa Valley vineyards typically yield fruit of concentrated flavour and soft, supple and velvety tannins that set them apart from the younger stuff. The Ebenezer block gives this wine its dark core and its muscle, with the fruit from Williamstown providing elegance, fragrance and spice. There’s plenty of blackberry, black satsuma plum, black cherry and cassis with great intensity and length.

Savitar is one of the great Shirazes from McLaren Vale, made with grapes grown on the Lopresti Vineyard's Chinese Block, located at the south end of McLaren Vale, about four kilometres east of the coastal town of Port Willunga. The vines struggle here, producing low yields of fruit with tiny berries which are full of black fruit flavours with dried herb, black olives and an earthy structure of dark smokiness, making this a power packed wine. 

It's named after a mythological dragon like creature, in homage to this wine's bold flavours and powerful length. It's an impressive wine for now and will undoubtedly age for the long haul - think a decade at least. 

The winemaking

Grapes for Savitar Shiraz are selected by hand from the Lopresti Vineyard in McLaren Vale, a site where they struggle and deliver in small volumes. This is regarded as outstanding raw material. They are fermented and the wine pressed before being transferred to oak barrels where it remains on light lees for 18 months before blending. 

This bold and beautiful McLaren Vale Shiraz puts the region's best foot forward - and the grape's most vibrant, peppery flavours forward too, in the glass. It's named after winery owner Frank Mitolo's three children, Gemma, Alex and Marco and is a deliciouly dark and spicy red with deep earthy notes. 

The wine is made from vineyards at the south end of McLaren Vale, which provides ripe but balanced dark flavours of powerful black cherries, black plums and strong notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and spice. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer says he picks grapes on flavour ripeness to make wines with mature tannins and vibrant fruit both being key characteristics of Mitolo wines. 

He describes GAM Shiraz as opulent, robust and multi layered; an ideal match for rustic foods.

It comes from the Lopresti vineyard, which is about three kilometres east of the coastal town of Port Willunga.

Winemaker Ben Glaetzer describes this wine as: "Full bodied and dense, the palate provides layers of ripe black fruits that open up endlessly. Firm, ripe tannins amply support the rich and opulent black fruit characters with the earthy background notes contributing further complexity. It is an ample and very classic expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz."
