Marlborough’s cool climate is ideal for Pinot Noir and that shines through in this lovely smooth and silky red which has flavours of black plums, red summer berries and earthy forest floor aromas. 

This is great drinking now and will reward cellaring for five years plus.

Commercial description

Terroir in a glass ? very site specific, sophisticated and unique. On the nose, blackberries, spice, violets and wild herb aromatics. Medium bodied with an interesting mix of red fruits and savoury notes. A complex, high energy wine, perfect to enjoy today or to patiently cellar.

Our flagship Pinot Noir, sourced primarily from our southern block. It carries the name of Surveyor ? John Turnbull Thomson linking both the land and its fruits to the vineyard owners, PM and David Hall-Jones family heritage.

35% whole bunch and 18% new oak.

This is a wonderfully exotic wine with aromas of flowers, pear and melon. The palate has nectarine and tropical fruit richness which is balanced with a smooth refreshing finish. Great on its own this Pinot Gris is incredibly versatile with a variety of food, our favourites being chilled furry peach and red curry mussels.

Vineyard
Fruit for this wine was selected from mature vineyards in the North Island that consistently produce outstanding Pinot Gris grapes. The 2021 vintage has delivered exceptional quality with low yields and a temperate dry growing season producing clean ripe fruit with great flavor intensity.

Winemaking
The focus in the winery is to capture the pure fruit flavours that come in from the vineyard. The grapes were harvested at optimum ripeness then gently pressed and the juice fermented at cool temperatures with selected yeasts to enhance aromatic potential. After ferment the wine rested on lees to enhance mouthfeel before blending and preparation for early bottling.

Intensely perfumed with lifted savoury notes interlaced with dark cherries, plum and cracked pepper. The tannins are soft and silky, layered with plush, ripe red fruits.

In Essential Awatere fashion the finish is lively, crisp and lingering.

In a valley forged by fault lines, carved by winds, drenched by sun and cooled by the Pacific Ocean, our wines are the essence of the Awatere. 

The Awatere Valley is windy, dry, stony and harsh, with hot days and cold nights that create extraordinary wines. Those extremes are heightened at the exposed Breloft Vineyard, where vines teeter at the edge of the Awatere River, buffeted by winds from the nearby Pacific Ocean. 

They dig their roots deep through rocky soils to survive, and produce wines of elegance, with a minerality and crisp clean acidity that are unique to our sliver of land in the heart of the Awatere Valley.

Pinot Gris for the Exiled comes from the St Helena clone of Pinot gris grown on both Waiheke and Ponui Islands. Lightly crushed and pressed then settled in tank before being racked with light solids into tank for fermentation. A mixture of un-inoculated and cultured yeast ferments are used with each vineyard fermenting slowly until the desired balance of acid, tannin and sugar is reached. The wines are then chilled to below zero to stop the fermentation before blending, the blend is held at low temperatures in the cellar until bottling to retain as much of the natural carbon dioxide as possible.

THE DRINKING
With hand-picked Chardonnay grapes in late summer, this Blanc de Blancs is a rustic and unfussy wine with a foamy mousse and biscuit and freshly baked bread aromas. It’s refreshing, fruity and perky on the palate with layers of pear, cherry and orange zest. To be enjoyed during the summer months, well chilled to quell that dissolved CO2. Unfiltered and unfined, this is a charming lo-fi natural wine.

THE GROWING
We will always remember 2021 as the perfect vintage for our dry farmed vines; as though I had direct dial to Hughie the weather god, we were blessed with decent dollops of rain at the optimum times during the growing season, much appreciated as our vines were recovering from the drought conditions of 2020. The one brix a week rule book was thrown out the window in 2021 and we had to be on our toes, ready to pick at a moment's notice, as the brix (sugar levels) were rising on a daily basis.

THE MAKING
Hand-picked single clone 95 Chardonnay grapes from our 'Puriri' block were whole bunch pressed and the juice put into a stainless-steel tank where it was cold settled for 24 hours then racked into its fermentation tank. No yeast or additions were made, apart from some organic yeast nutrient, to help to complete the wild ferment. The decision when to bottle is always a challenging one, too much unfermented sugars and you have a too fizzy bottle rocket in your hands, too little sugars and you have all sausage without the sizzle. Much like the picking decision, I had to base my bottling decision on experience, taste and sugar levels. The ferment tank was chilled down to 2 degrees C for 48 hours then lifted onto my trailer, driven back to our vineyard and gravity bottled at Zeelandt Brewery by the same crew who picked the grapes.

An expressive full bodied sparkling wine made from 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay, given extended lees ageing time to enable the wine to develop complex creamy aromas and layers of flavours with strawberries, nectarine, white peach and freshly baked sourdough bread.

Winemaker notes say that the extended lees time has infused the wine with a delicious umami savoriness, making this 2020 vintage a perfect match for crayfish, oysters and other kaimoana. 

Chardonnay with all the bells and fresh citrusy flavour notes adding depth and balance to the smooth creamy notes. Here's a wine that shows how exceptionally well Chardonnay grows in Marlborough. 

Winemaker Julian Richards makes a diverse and delicious range of wines from top vineyard spots around the country (and sometimes from further afield too), including this deliciously full bodied Marlborough Chardonnay. 

Creamy notes and zesty acidity both provide appeal and balance to this wine's lemon zingy flavours and white peachy aromas. 

Te Mania Chardonnay is an elegant wine made with just a little oak to compliment and show case the fresh fruity flavours. This wine offers nectarine and ripe citrus aromas with just a touch of light oak. Stone fruit characters continue with citrus on the palate, complemented by a silky texture. The palate has appealing weight, texture and a long fresh finish.

Mission Estate Jewelstone Chardonnay is a pale straw coloured wine with complex aromatics of sweet stone fruit, marzipan and struck flint notes. The palate is full and fruit forward with a fine structure and a long clean finish.
