Styled as a ‘Gazetteer of Scotch Whisky’, this 350+ page book will made a very useful and handsome addition to every whisky lovers’ library, and it will be a most welcome reference for anyone who has even the slightest inclination to taste or drink a single malt. The body of the book is devoted to a portrait of every distillery in Scotland. The history, ‘curiosities; different bottling expressions and details on the production are covered in addition to how the whiskies taste, are covered by Maclean. In addition, there are sections on the history of Scotch in general, regional differences (interestingly downplayed by Maclean in favour of ‘tradition’, blending and making to a style), plus good information on independent bottles and miscellaneous facts and figures. Of particular note is the ‘Single Malt Whisky Flavour Map’ which places whiskies according to their position on the scales of lightness and richness against delicate and smokiness.
